Happy Canada Day [Jul. 1st, 2009|10:28 am]

A fine example of the Film Board's ability to be artfully terrifying.

from the 'photochromasomes' set belonging to seriously one of the best flickr accounts i've ever seen

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ajourneyroundmyskull/sets/

also found this neat video for 'here we go magic' - its got a nice film board quality to it. good song, too.

my dad came to visit this week! i took him to the observatory because that is where i take people, apparently. i wish i was smarter about that stuff so i could say more when we get there besides 'so yeah, i guess they can see pretty well from here.'

Agnes Martin had some neat stuff.

I can't even believe this Air France thing. They haven't found anything! They thought they did - they said they found a seat cushion or something, and they had a memorial service at Notre Dame. But then today they announced the stuff they found wasn't from the plane after all. The people looking for the plane were on the radio last night and said that the general area where they think the plane went down is very deep and, below the surface, very mountainous. The idea of this plane spread out in pieces across some anonymous underwater mountain and nobody ever finding it is just about the scariest thing i can think of. It was just so quiet, the way it happened, too. They didn't get a distress call, no mayday's or anything, and then the plane just didn't show up! Whatever happened, happened out in the middle of nowhere with nobody listening. Sheesh.

My officemate is working on this comic that involves lizard men, and i asked him if he based it on the theory that guy has about lizard men ruling the world and princess diana being in on it and stuff, and he'd never heard of that, so we're listening to coast to coast right now in the office and he's talking to this guy going on about lizard men and thunderbird eggs and all sorts of things, but our director comes in for a surprise visit just as the guy talking takes a sharp turn and just starts yelling 'i love lucifer! i love him!' and now we both look like freaks.

Henry Peach Robinson was really good at making one good picture from the negatives of many pictures. This picture is made from 6 seperate negatives so he could get light on things that wouldnt otherwise get light on them. its kind of like collage, but with the intention of exaggerating the picture. pretty neat stuff.

The Road movie finally released a trailer. the film itself of it looks pretty great, but the trailer they made with it is kinda terrible. i hope they make another better one. all that disaster footage at the beginning is completely unnecessary and charlize theron, unless they changed things around, should only be in about 9 minutes of the movie. hmmmm. it comes out October 16th. the SAME DAY as Where the Wild Things Are. i guess its a double feature night that night.

she's canadian and everything!

i was in 7-11 last night in the wee hours, looking for swedish fish, and 'it's too late' by carole king came on the store radio. i don't know why, but i just got really into it. its not even the lyrics or anything. that song just feels like you're wearing a scarf and its fall and you're driving around in some giant brown car and running over leaves and little branches in some brick house neighborhood. how does a song about breaking up make a picture in your head like that? especially when you're standing in a 7-11 in the middle of a hot night trying to find an alternative to swedish fish?

ontario science center logo, the elder. a total genius idea, and no muss or fuss in putting it
down.

but, because its OLD, they get Bruce Mau to 'refresh' it.

YES. this is so much better. now it takes up twice the room it used to, plus, i really think he made us realise that SCIENCE was the focus of the science center. and dark green is really the future. take a bow, Mau.

probably my favorite guy in the canadian national gallery in David Milne. i always leave him till last when i go there. he's so great. you don't see much of him outside the gallery, but yesterday i was in a record store and i saw an album cover by this guy named Tim Hecker with his crater painting on it! all cropped and stuff, but it was there.

he was really good at craters.

i haven't heard the album yet, but maybe i will buy it just to support David Milne. about 80 years too late.

(tons more David Milne here:

also:

If you are a news organization and you have a panel of experts examining a situation, and half of them say it is going to go very badly, and the other half say it's not going to go very badly...are you really obligated to report that to your audience? Or rather, it seems like a more interesting news story would be about how a group of people came to spend so much time getting to know a specific subject as to be called experts in that field, and how they all came together to observe an event in this field, and how, even though they were all looking at the same event, they disagreed completely about what was going to happen. Not only that, but the number of disagreements within the group came to be so even that to add them all up left exactly zero resolution on the problem, even when it was put to something as crude as a majority vote. What are the chances of that? Thats news!
